A summer drive, fall hike or winter ski into a decommissioned but refurbished fire lookout in the Crystal Basin near Lake Tahoe.
Location: Off Ice House Rd. in the Crystal Basin off Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe.
Robb’s Mountain Hut, also known as Robb’s Peak Hut is an old caretakers hut for the now decommissioned fire lookout on Robb’s Peak. It has been refurbished and now is quite comfortable with propane heat and stove.
You do need to reserve it 6 months ahead as it is popular. In the summer you are allowed to drive all the way to the hut. The road is gated but the forest service provides you with the combination to the lock. In the fall they lock the gate for the winter snows and until there is enough snow to ski you need to walk in about 3 miles and 1,000 feet of elevation. We once stayed here in June and got snowed on! We’ve stayed here once in the winter and it was quiet and peaceful – the hut is small enough that it heats up quickly and stays toasty all night.
It is a pleasant hike and many do the hike just to visit the fire lookout without staying at the hut. Staying at the hut, especially with kids, is pretty darn cool.
