Hike to Old Fire Lookout in Sawtooth Mountains, ID

An under-the-radar wildflower hike with great views across to the high peaks of the Sawtooths

At six miles roundtrip and 2,600 feet of gain this Horton Peak adventure is a strenuous hike, but I enjoy the relative solitude and peace compared with the popular hikes across the valley in the Sawtooths proper. For example the day we did this hike we didn’t run into anyone else. The next day we did a well-known hike in the Sawtooths and it was a continuous stream of people.

For a family hike, I’ll take the solitude any day – it allows conversation and more family togetherness time.

This hike is known as the Horton Peak hike and can be found in alltrails.com or printed hiking guides.
