Hiking Tom’s Thumb, Arizona

A Beautiful “Cactus” hike in Scottsdale Arizona

This a four mile round trip 1,300 foot elevation gain hike in the desert outside Scottsdale.

Location: North east of Scottsdale Arizona in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

I admit as a landscape photographer from California I was taken with the beauty and texture of the cactus plants on this hike. I suppose locals are used to it. This hike, Tom’s Thumb, was rated as the number one hike in the area by AllTrails so we had to do it.

AllTrails rated this as “hard” but it really isn’t a big deal as long as you deal with the heat. Meaning start early or do it in the fall/winter like we did, and we saw plenty of kids on the trail.
